The inaugural project of Midnight Research Labs is a client/server grid computing application to complete the second phase of Aaron Peterson‘s internet steganography search. The first phase searched through millions of images looking for statistically significant images for possible steganography. The second phase will need to iterate through each of these images and take a much closer (and computationally intensive) look to try to actually identify and hopefully extract any information.

Since this is a more intensive phase, we are going to create a distributed client that can be run from any system. We’re hoping that others will help us with this, and run the client to help break potentially steganographic images, =)
